After recent adventures with analogue synths, composer and improviser Matthew Bourne returns to the acoustic piano in the first of a new series of special two-piano concerts with legendary improvising pianist Keith Tippett. Tippett has been a seminal figure in the evolution of UK jazz since the 1960s and, like Bourne, has forged his own unique and ever evolving sound.
Bourne and Tippett are mesmerising live performers, famous for their idiosyncrasy, virtuosity, and non-conformity. This exciting musical partnership between two maverick pianists, a generation apart, is a meeting of like-minded but distinct individuals finally joining forces to make new music together.
The concert will begin with a short set from Paul Taylor, a Newcastle-based pianist whose music blends classical and jazz traditions to create unorthodox, harmonically complex and compellingly beautiful music.
