Vocalist, trombonist and pianist Rene Alvarez was born in Santiago de Cuba and was a leading light in top Cuban band Sur Caribe for six years. Now based in the UK, he is an in demand musician, playing at festivals such as Glastonbury, Brecon Jazz Festival and Electric Picnic in Ireland.
Alvarez’s album “Abriendo Los Caminos” with his Cuban Combination band is fast becoming one of the top salsa albums of 2017.
Marsden Mechanics will be transformed into a dance club, as Alvarez’s eight piece salsa band, featuring the cream of London’s Cuban musicians, are joined by a Cuban salsa dancer, who will give a salsa lesson beforehand and lead the dancing during the concert to help get everyone’s feet moving.

The magnificently restored nineteenth century Mechanics Institute hall is our main concert venue. Full bar facilities are available for all Festival concerts. A full range of meals and snacks are also available throughout the Festival. The Festival Book Office is also located at the Mechanics Hall over the Festival weekend.
